Strengthening Our Community

Dear Fortitude Family,

In today’s fast-paced world, finding ways to bring our community together is more important than ever. One of the most powerful, yet often overlooked, opportunities to build connection, trust, and shared pride is through inter-club competitions and other student-centered events.

For nearly twenty years, our competitions in Spring and Winter have been a cornerstone of our Fortitude journey. What started as a chance for students to test their skills has grown into something much deeper: a tradition that brings our entire community together.

These competitions are so much more than medals and trophies. They are moments that unite students, families, and instructors around common goals, shared experiences, and collective growth.

  1. A Place for Community to Thrive

When students from different clubs or schools gather to compete, they do more than just play—they come together. These events become a vibrant meeting point for parents, instructors, and community members to support our clubs and get to know one another. The relationships formed on the sidelines or in the bleachers are often as meaningful as the ones on the field or stage.

  1. Strengthening Bonds Beyond the Dojang

When families attend these events—whether cheering from the stands or helping behind the scenes—they become part of something greater. These shared moments help deepen the bond between parent and child, between students and instructors, and among fellow Fortitude families. Every bow, every sparring match, and every cheer helps build our community.

Cheering them on, celebrating their wins, and helping them through their challenges—we send a powerful message: “I’m with you.” Competitions create memories that strengthen the bond between parent and child. Whether it’s a proud high five after a great performance or a pep talk after a tough loss, these moments matter.

  1. Building Trust and Team Spirit

These events also foster trust and collaboration—not just among students, but between families and instructors as well. We see one another in action: the coach who encourages every child, the instructor & official who volunteers their Sunday, the parent who brings snacks for everyone. Over time, these shared efforts build a web of trust that benefits the entire school community.

  1. Celebrating Diversity – A Culture of Respect and Inclusion

Our competition brings together students of all ages, belts, and backgrounds. It’s a celebration of diversity and mutual respect, where every competitor learns not just to perform—but to uplift others, win with humility, and lose with grace.

It’s a reminder that everyone has something valuable to contribute. These inclusive environments help us all learn respect, empathy, and the importance of teamwork—lessons that last far beyond the competition itself.

  1. Creating a Sense of Belonging

Representing their club or school gives students a strong sense of identity and pride. When we come together to cheer them on, we reinforce that they’re part of something bigger than themselves—a supportive, united community that values their growth and effort.

In Closing

We encourage every family to participate in or attend upcoming competitions. Your presence, your cheers, and your support go a long way—not only in lifting our students, but in strengthening the ties that make our community so special.

Let’s continue to grow together, one event at a time.
